1. Can I train if I’ve never done BJJ before?
Absolutely! We welcome beginners of all levels. We offer beginner-friendly classes, so you can start your journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu regardless of experience. Our instructors are great at helping newcomers feel comfortable. We even offer a free trial class! Book here.
2. Do I need to be in shape to start BJJ?
Not at all! BJJ is for people of all fitness levels. You’ll get fitter as you train, but no need to worry about being in perfect shape when you start. Everyone starts somewhere, and we’ll help you along the way!
3. Do you offer private lessons?
Yes, we do! We offer private lessons with our experienced instructors. They’re a great way to fast-track your progress and get personalized attention. Contact us for more details or to schedule a session.
4. Can I train if I have an injury or special condition?
We recommend speaking with your doctor first if you have any concerns, but BJJ can often be modified for people with injuries or special conditions. Our coaches can work with you to ensure you train safely and effectively while considering your specific needs.
5. How long will it take to get my blue belt?
There’s no exact timeline as every person progresses at their own rate. On average, it can take anywhere from 1 to 4 years to reach blue belt, depending on how consistently you train and how quickly you learn the techniques.
6. What should I bring to class?
For Gi classes, bring your Gi, a belt, and water. For No-Gi classes, bring athletic wear (rashguard and pocket-less shorts) and make sure to wear clean, fresh gear. Don’t forget your water bottle!
7. What is Open Mat?
Open Mat is a non-structured training session where you can spar, roll with others, or work on techniques with a partner. It’s a great time to practice what you’ve learned and gain experience in a more relaxed environment. Members can attend free of charge! Non-members: $20.
8. Do you have a weight limit for classes?
Nope, BJJ is for everyone, regardless of size or body type. We have students of all different shapes and sizes, and the beauty of BJJ is that it allows you to use technique over brute strength. You’ll find that the techniques work no matter your body type.
9. What is your cancellation policy for memberships?
We offer flexible membership options with no lock-in contracts. If you need to cancel or pause your membership, please let us know 30 days in advance, and we’ll assist you with the process.
10. Are there any discounts for long-term memberships?
Yes! We offer discounts for students who commit to longer-term memberships. Contact us for more details on pricing and available offers.
11. I forgot my Gi, what should I do?
No problem! MyBJJ offers Gi hire for only $10.
12. Do you have showers at your gym?
HQ – Yes, we do! Just make sure to bring your own towel.
13. How do I get to your gym using public transport?
HQ Location: The bus stop is right outside the gym on Parramatta Road.
Train: It’s a 19-minute walk from Newtown Station.
NB Location: Bus: The closest bus stop is just 3 minutes away at the Watson Street Interchange.

14. Can I attend the advanced class if I’m a white belt?
We don’t limit students by belt rank when it comes to classes. However, we highly recommend attending fundamental and/or mixed classes until you’ve earned at least 3 stripes on your white belt.
15. Are there any rules I should know about?
Absolutely! No shoes on the mats. Please wear footwear off the mats and when moving between them.
16. What’s the youngest age you accept for classes?
We start at 3 years old! We have a Mini Champs class for 3-5-year-olds, a Junior BJJ class for kids aged 5+, and classes for teens and adults.
17. Can I wear a colored Gi to class?
Adults – Yes, you can wear any Gi you like! We just ask that for promotions (stripes/belts) or competitions (if you’re representing our gym), please wear our team Gi. This helps support your team, shows respect, and makes it clear who you’re fighting for. Kids – White gi’s only.
18. Can I visit your gym if I’m not a member?
Yes! We offer a casual drop-in fee of $35. If you’re interested in sparring, we have open mat sessions every Saturday from 4-6 pm and Sunday from 10 am-12 pm for a $20 fee (members are free). We also offer a free trial class if you’re thinking about joining—just let us know, and we’ll arrange it for you.
19. Do you offer birthday parties at the gym?

20. I think I want to compete, what do I need to do?
That’s awesome! If you’re considering competing, the first step is to speak with one of our coaches. They’ll help you assess your readiness, give you advice on preparing, and guide you through the process of registering for competitions. We’re here to support you every step of the way!
